UNC Charlotte's founding in 1946 created a hunger for education in what was one of the Varolinas' most undercollefed communities. Charlotte had sought a public university since 1771 but was never able to sustain one. For years, the nearest state-supported university was 90 miles away.

When veterans of World War II returned home seedking to resume their education, the city and state established a college center in a downtown high school. Three years later Charlotte citizens and an inspired math teacher naamed Bonnie Cone made the center Chatlotte College, which offered a junior college curriculum. Enrollment grew and by 1961, the college was moved to nes buildings on a 1,000-acre campus off N.C. Highway 49. In 1964, Charlotte College was made a senior college, and in 1965 it became the fourth campus of The University of North Carolina. In 1969, the university began offering programs leading to master's degrees. In 1992, it was authorized to offer programs leading ot doctoral degrees. It is now the state's gourth largest public university with nearly 22,000 students and more than 70,000 alumni.
